Making Work Our Prayer

The Suggested Chapter Assembly and Household Topics for June 2017 are Now Available

We live in the world nowadays where people expect to “get the benefits” without doing the hard work. The “instant” mentality causes people to be impatient as they want the results now. “Quick-fix” is now in rather than wait and work. The value of working hard for something is slowly fading away. A lot of people are submitting to laziness, inaction and ineffectiveness. We must go back and learn the Christian principles of work and its value for us.

The Bible has a lot to say about work and its counterpart laziness – sluggard or slothful. The author of the Book of Proverbs even wrote this funny verse about the lazy person who always finds an excuse not to work and strain his body.

The sluggard says, “There is a lion outside! I shall be slain in the streets!” (Proverbs 22:13)

Let’s look at what the Bible says about work, with Jesus being one great example.

We all want to experience the best in our lives. We want the best food for our family. We want the best gadget in the market. We want to experience the best service from our government offices. We all want to experience the best because we don’t settle for anything less.

We also want to excel in our chosen fields. We want to be the best engineer, best teacher, best nurse, best friend and best father. We want to excel in what we are and what we do.

Even God wants us to excel. The pursuit of excellence is both a goal and a mark of spiritual maturity.

Now as you excel in everything—in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in utmost eagerness, and in our love for you[a]—so we want you to excel also in this generous undertaking. (2 Corinthians 8:7)

Excellence must be rightly motivated by values and motives.

There are points in our lives, we catch ourselves regretting the things that we have done in the past. We regret the missed opportunities. We regret the words that we have said; or words that we could have held back. We regret the things we did or things that we shouldn’t have done. We regret not spending our time more wisely, that could have resulted for us accomplishing more. Everyone, at one way or another, have committed a mistake or a decision that they would like to correct or undo.

As they say, in looking back, we learn and in doing so, will enable us to move forward.

As singles, we are in search for meaning in this life. We find our meaning in the careers we pursue, in the relationships we enter and keep, in the activities we invest are time into. Sometimes, even if we find our schedules fully packed and we are very busy in life, but we still end up feeling empty.

When we feel empty, we feel that we are treading on a life that is meaningless. We feel worthless and unproductive. We feel stagnant. We feel that there is nothing new and exciting happening in our lives. This happens because we fill ourselves with unessential things that do not last and do not give meaning to our hearts.
